Probably Brasilia's most famous structure and the centerpiece of the Esplanade of Ministries ("Esplanada dos MinisteĢrios") is Brazil's National Congress. Brazil's Congress consists of the Federal Senate and Chamber of Deputies, which can be found underneath the half-circle-shaped structures seen from the outside. The building's interesting structure is not merely aesthetic but also symbolic. The closed semi-sphere signifies that Congress protects and symbolically covers its constituents. The open semi-sphere represents democracy, signified by the bottom-up involvement of its constituents. In between these two spheres are the two vertical office towers.
Inside the National Congress, expect to be inundated with lots of art and design. One of the eyecatchers inside is pictured above and is located in the Senate. The roof, consisting of thousands of little plates, is designed by the famous Brazilian designer Athos Bulcao. For those interested: visiting the Congress is possible in English and Portuguese!
