Is This #EqualPay? In Lebanon, payment inequality is not only based on gender, but based on what sector you work in, what race, religion or nationality you belong to. In Lebanon payment inequality severely affects Migrant Domestic Workers. The Kafala system is exploiting women of colour as cheap labour force with extreme pay inequality. More so with the financial crisis, MDWs have continuously been and still are paid in a devalued currency, which only covers a fraction of the agreed amount in the original contracts. However, with the exclusion from the labour law, MDWs cannot go on strike or demand changes like their Lebanese counterparts do. Instead, they are forced to quietly accept their situation and continue to work with these unfair wages. The Kafala system needs to be abolished and replaced by a new and fair immigration and work system, which allows MDWs to form unions and demand their rights including their rights for better pay.
