Before you go to bed, take a minute to reflect on Kalief Browder.
If you are still not 100% clear on what systemic racism is and how current institutions and policies in every part of our society are destroying black lives, please commit to watching the Kalief Browder Story or doing research on the trash #cashbail system that criminalizes poverty.
Kalief Browder was 16 and wrongfully accused of stealing a backpack. He then spent 1,120 days (3 YEARS) in Rikers because he couldn’t afford bail.
Tragically, today is the 5th Anniversary of his passing.
Kalief Browder refused to admit guilt for a crime he did not commit.
Kalief Browder was starved, beaten and abused by guards and inmates.
Kalief Browder spent nearly 2 years of inhumane treatment in solitary confinement while incarcerated.
The charges against him were eventually dismissed. “Time: The Kalief Browder Story” is on Netflix.
Please let me know below if you’ve seen it or will commit to watching it.
