Flashback to the 2018 Billabong Pipemasters when @countercurrent_art director @estess.art.science created the Plastic Free Pipeline sculpture from marine debris along with @wslpure @sustainablecoastlineshawaii @kokuahawaiifoundation @bureo @hydroflask @reusehawaii . Thousands of people got barreled in the sculpture and millions of viewers caught it's message online urging them to choose reusables over single-use plastics and to support local, responsible fisheries that don't litter the ocean with plastic net and rope. In the years that followed, the sculpture travelled to @turtlebayresort, Shark's Cove, and the @bishopmuseum for the Mai Kinohi Mai exhibit on the history of surfing in the Hawaiian Islands. . But nothing lasts forever, and after several years outdoors it was time to decommission the sculpture before the reclaimed wood structure became unstable. @estess.art.science reclaimed the rope and made some art panels that were donated to @sustainablecoastlineshawaii and @kokuahawaiifoundation to help fundraise for their programs. @Instakahi of @Parley.tv was kind enough to take the hard plastics to use in their educational recycling machines at the @BishopMuseum Unfortunately the reclaimed lumber was too far gone to be reused so it was taken to a local waste transfer station to be incinerated (like most of Hawaii's trash is). FYI incinerating waste to create electricity is generally inefficient, produces air pollution, and results in large amounts of toxic ash that still need to be landfilled on Oahu. . @Countercurrent_Art partnered with @shimizujones to create this video with tunes by @cole_sandman to capture the full lifecycle of the project and hopefully inspire youth to embrace their own #artivism .
