HAPPY BIRTHDAY M! I met Madonna @madonna when Steven Meisel asked me to style her first cover for @rollingstone magazine. Her look at that moment was a bra and a crinoline, which I had. Steven, who had shot her Like a Virgin album cover, thought it might be better if we shot her in jeans instead. I didn't have any, so while Madonna was on set, she slipped off her crinoline and I took off my jeans and gave them to her. We did the shot as I stood in the studio with my black crew neck sweater and tightie whities. Weeks later I was walking in the East Village and heard my name being shouted . From across the street came Madonna and two friends, just to say hello. That has always stayed with me- she was on the brink of super stardom and I was just the guy who dressed her for a magazine cover (and gave her my pants), and yet, SHE crossed the street to say hello. I worked with her and Steven many other times after that, most notably the SEX book. She always came to set 5 or 10 minutes before call time and worked tirelessly the entire shoot. She has always shown great kindness towards me and my daughter and for that I adore her beyond words. Happy Birthday Madonna, love you.
