All of the beautiful messages in response to me directing a movie, aside from making me feel so loved and encouraged; they have also been so grounding. Thank you for your support and your messages. They firmly planted me in my why- I love stories. I love how they connect us. I love how they make us feel seen. I love that they serve as roadmaps. I love how they heal us. I have loved working in collaboration with people to support them telling their stories for the last two decades. I’m so excited to tell our story. My directors statement: Four years ago my husband and I received a dire medical diagnosis for our daughter that forced us to face life’s fragility. Each morning we woke not knowing if we would hear our daughter’s voice again. I Was Here is based on our experience seeking guidance as parents of a child whose life hung in the balance. The film interrogates the relationship between joy and grief, and asks how do we remain present in the face of the unknown. It is a meditation on a period of our lives that was a blur of uncertainty and isolation, but also a wildly alive time that taught us to claim joy and lean into the deeper truths that connect all of our stories.
