If you are following backwoodz, chances are you know who Joseph Mault (@josephmaultiii) is, and even if you don’t know him by name, if you have been following us for any period of time you almost certainly have seen his work. Joseph has been a big part of our movement ever since May 2017 when we dropped visuals for Willie Green’s “The Maji” featuring Denmark Vessey. From billy woods’ “Spongebob” and “Blood Thinner,” through Armand Hammer’s “Barbarians/Overseas,” “Sir Benni Miles” and the unforgettable “Charms” video, Joseph has brought a magic to our visual collaborations that helped push us to new heights. Not to mention that pieces like the Paraffin short film, “Groundhog’s Day,” “Falling Out the Sky,” and Earl Sweatshirt’s “Tabula Rasa” are artifacts of a very special moment in the history of this art form. We are living in a historic time for hip-hop that goes beyond Backwoodz, but we hope to at least be part of the conversation. We would not be where we are without Joseph. Joseph is now working on a feature film, #StrangeKindness—some years in development—and we’d love for you to take a moment to check out his passion project and consider contributing.
