The Supreme Court voted to eliminate the constitutional right to abortion meaning half of the U.S. will lose access to legal abortion. The majority of the South & Midwest will become abortion deserts, forcing thousands of people, who’re unable to leave their state, to remain pregnant against their will. It will lead to heightened criminalization of all pregnant people, even those who want to stay pregnant. States in these regions that have not been listed here because they don’t have current triggers in place, still have severely restrictive laws that will take effect (Georgia, South Carolina, Florida) & will likely move to fully ban abortion as quickly as possible. States w/ protected access to abortion will see an increase in people being forced to travel in. This means that residents in states where abortion will remain legal will also now experience longer wait times of 2-3+ weeks to make appointments, meaning a significant increase in cost for their procedures w/ each week their pregnancy continues. Abortion bans harm everyone no matter which state you are in. There is also extremely valid concern that Republicans will move to pass a nation-wide ban if they take congress again. Overturning Roe is just the beginning. The anti-abortion movement is violent, organized, & well funded. That means everyone in support of the human right to bodily autonomy must be in lock step w/ one another & follow the lead of Reproductive Justice groups who’ve been preparing for this moment for decades.
