WILDLIFE POPULATIONS PLUMMETED BY NEARLY 70% BETWEEN 1970 AND 2018 The recently published Living Planet Report from the World Wildlife Fund, prepared by numerous world scientists, shows that there have been drastic declines in the abundance of wildlife despite the efforts of the last 30 years to reverse this trend. And in Latin America and the Caribbean, it is even worse. The report indicates that these regions have suffered 94% loss of wildlife abundance — the highest percentage of any geographic region on the planet. “We are living through the dual crises of biodiversity loss and climate change driven by the unsustainable use of our planet’s resources. And unless we stop treating these emergencies as separate issues, neither problem will be addressed effectively” WWF writes. It is also clear that this rampant decline has serious impacts on the health and well-being of the human species. In the face of this dire news, we want to offer hope. With our strategic collaborators, @Rewilding_Argentina and @RewildingChile, we are working tirelessly to reverse this trend by not only protecting intact ecosystems, but restoring damaged ones through rewilding. We help create parks to protect ecosystems; we restore the health and proper functioning of these ecosystems by recovering extinct and threatened species; we promote the development of restorative economies based on nature tourism that create well-being in local communities and help conserve biodiversity. Together have had real positive impact on the ground, on the health of the regions where Rewilding Argentina and Rewilding Chile work, and on the communities surrounding the protected areas. And each species rewilded, each ecosystem nudged back to health, helps all of us and this beautiful planet to thrive.
