Spaces hold within their walls stories and histories that are too heavy to be found between parchment rolls. Chip away the pain, and there are secrets whispering back. Snake your way through pillars and you will see framed beauty staring back at you, quietly. I have always been fascinated by the aura that many windowed walls of North Kolkata 'rajbaris'. Year long, I would watch films like 'Jalsaghar' and 'Utsob' and during the autumn festival would feel a rising nostalgia and yearning for something this decadent and yet arrested in time, as I roamed the North Calcutta lanes. Today, I returned to the city as part of a special project that took me back to the august space of the Sovabajar Rajbari - the first public (sarbojonin) pujo in Kolkata. It is a thing of great humbling pride that the @unesco has chosen to declare the heritage of this autumnal invocation of the goddess as part of the many intangible heritage traditions of this world.
