THE BREEDING SEASON OF THE RED-AND-GREEN MACAWS BEGINS
Spring is arriving in the Southern Hemisphere and with it the beginning of the breeding season for many birds, including the red-and-green macaw. At the Cambyretá section of Iberá Park in Corrientes Province, Argentina, three pairs of macaws are defending their nests and displaying typical breeding behaviors as the season commences.
These birds are part of the Red-and-Green Macaw Reintroduction Project of our strategic collaborator, @Rewilding_Argentina, an ambitious effort to restore a species that has been extinct in Argentina for over a hundred years. But a few individuals are not enough to restore this species’ important ecological role as seed dispersers: a sufficiently large population that can be self-sustaining is needed. So this time of the year is critical for augmenting population numbers of the macaws.
The Rewilding Argentina team on the ground in Cambyretá is already monitoring the macaw pairs to help them breed, lay eggs and hatch chicks successfully. We hope this new season will be prosperous for “Big Red” and for continuing to recover lost ecological interactions in Iberá.
