We are so excited to announce our first self-managed abortion & medication abortion teach-in hosted at @stemsbrooklyn & led by a Fund Abortion Not Police collective member who has been trained by @sass_usa! We’ll cover how to accompany/support someone having a self-managed abortion with pills, how to share information about abortion pills (aka medication abortion), & precautionary steps a person can take to to protect themselves from being targeted by anti-abortion laws. Self Managed Abortion (SMA) refers to the practice of ending one’s pregnancy without a doctor or healthcare provider. This teach-in acknowledges that not every abortion with pills is self-managed or illegal. There are three different ways of having a medication abortion with pills which we’ll expand on. All methods are very medically safe, but each have different legal statuses: 1) In-Clinic Medication Abortion 2) Telehealth Abortion 3) Self-Managed Abortion For many folks who already face additional barriers to clinic-based abortions such as immigration status, location, age, COVID-19, income inequality, race, medical discrimination against trans people, people who face criminalization for sex work, & the intersection of all of these experiences, SMA is their safest and oftentimes only option for ending a pregnancy. In addition to these socio-economic barriers, people who self-manage face legal repercussions including being arrested and jailed. Currently, 3 states in the U.S. still retain unconstitutional laws that put people at risk of prosecution for SMA. There are approximately 20 states that don’t outright ban it, but politically-motivated police & prosecutors purposely target people who self-manage by manipulating other laws against them. In both cases, it's hard to enforce, but it's a risk & has happened. Self-managing an abortion with medication is a safe and effective way to end a pregnancy as long as people have access to accurate medical information, quality medications, and confidential backup medical care, if needed.
