The 3rd image is outside of Dylan and Rotolo's apartment at 161 West 4th. “It was winter, dirty snow on the ground...”, the photographer told The New York Times in 1997, “Well, I can’t tell you why I did it, but I said, Just walk up and down the street. There wasn’t very much thought to it. It was late afternoon — you can tell that the sun was low behind them. It must have been pretty uncomfortable, out there in the slush. The light was fading so quickly that I was able to shoot only one color roll and a few black and whites. We were lucky to get what we got.” - Don Hunstein This series from Don has to be some of my favorite music/New York photography of all time. It perfectly captures a moment frozen in time. You can almost feel the chill in the air and hear the snow crackle under the feet of the loving couple, immortalized forever in Manhattan in the early sixties. When I think of music photography, this is it. In the time that I took my picture, someone riding their bike past me saw what I was doing and stopped to chat a bit about Dylan and to let me know where his apartment was (which I had just left to get the third image). An older tourist woman saw the picture I was holding up and put two and two together and began to freak out. “No, you lie, that was taken right here? No way. RIGHT HERE?! Can you take my picture standing there?”. I then took a seat inside the Coppola Cafe @thecoppolacafe (directly across from this location), where they have the album nicely displayed on their shelf. As I ate and drank some coffee, I watched as two people separately stopped to take pictures of the street. It’s amazing to see how powerful an image can be and how much they resonate with people so many years later.
