18 years and 351 days ago - 90 hours before I was born - my dad topped out the Salathe Wall after free climbing it. Yesterday, I did the same. Thank you so much dad for supporting me on this ascent, and happy (belated) Father’s Day! I hadn’t been on the Salathe in 2 years, and we only decided to try the route less than a week ago, when we saw an unseasonable cool spell in the weather forecast. I didn’t really have any expectations until I sent Pitch 19, a 13c corner, on my first try (it’s not the Salathe if you do the monster offwidth instead! 😉). The headwall proved to be pretty challenging for me, and I’ll have to come back to link it into one pitch, but I sent it in two pitches on the third day of the push. This was an experience I won’t forget for a while. Photos 3 and 4 (by @jimthornburg) are of my dad on the headwall back in 2003.
