And part of me wanted to remain perfectly unknown to you because I knew I’d never be able to convey just how much you meant to me. But when the time came how could I say no to our first conversation for interview? And later, to open for your release shows in LA & NY with the obscenely talented and sweetest, coolest band The Linda Lindas. And what a relief I opted to forgo my reservations and dive in. These shows have been a true highlight of my life and career. A full circle, inspiring moment to get to watch my perfect hero captivate a sea of thousands who have also admired you endlessly for two decades. For your range, your singular style, your unparalleled showmanship. What a joy it was to finally get to dance to Soft Shock, sob to Maps, scream along to Date with the Night after all these years of loving Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But also to get to watch you lead with such grace and quiet power behind the scenes. To curate a crew and team that was so welcoming to mine. To make space for the talents around you while effortlessly shining the brightest. Thank you for taking the time to make us all feel cared for during your monumental sold out album release shows. Not only were you the first to pave the way and make me feel like I could find a home in music as a weirdo wasian outsider, you’ve inspired me yet again to be a kinder, more thoughtful, playful and generous leader and human being.
