the “Alopex’ mask is inspired by the icelandic refur, the arctic fox - whose fur changes from white to brown in sync with the season. this seemed like an appropriate reference, alluding to the passing of time and changing of the seasons. but also to the hardiness and adaptability of iceland’s only native land mammal.
these masks were worn by the string players in procession, something that was sketched out beautifully by @andrewthomashuang in his early moodboards, so this was something i had this in mind while designing them.
the repeating shapes in the structure was a nod to the idea of family generations and ancestry - bigger and smaller repeating fox-eye shapes rising up and down the mask in a chain, like an ancestral tree.
while i was in the design phase for this mask, i was visited by a fox early in the morning near my house - a rare occurrnce and one i took to be a good omen. especially because its fur was in the transitional phase - bright white with funny patches of brown all over it.
all the 3D printing on these masks was done by the brilliant @halldorsnorrason 🦊 thank you so much for all your dedication to this project
