Here's a great tip from One K Rider Lauren Sprieser on Improving transitions, and improving lateral suppleness:
Forward is your friend!
For the horse with tricky transitions in and out of canter, add heat to the trot. It’s much harder for a horse to weaponize the neck or the contact when they’re really in front of the leg, and on the very young or very green horse, I might not even ask for the canter with a specific aid; I might help them find it by accelerating the trot into the canter, so the transition is more smooth.
For downward transitions from canter to trot, don’t overcollect; a horse needs to have forward energy, and actually fall a bit on the forehand (just for a moment!) to go from canter to trot, because the canter is a gait with both an uphill and downhill moment, whereas the trot is a level gait.
