One of the largest 19th century Viennese Prunkstücke known today, this splendorous cornucopia or hunting horn would have been a dazzling addition to any tablescape at the time. Bands of inlaid lapis lazuli alternate with brightly-enamelled scenes featuring a number of miniature cornucopiae or hunting horns as part of the decoration, making it a rather fun mise en abyme object (a formal technique in which an image contains a smaller image of itself). The reviving of old techniques, typical for Viennese work at that date, is further joined by a surprisingly modern approach to enamelling in the pale pastel shades of the rock on which the eagle perches. Specialist @microcosms_of_beauty joins us from Sotheby’s London to highlight the details of this cornucopia by Karl Rössler. Offered in the ‘STONE IV’ auction, open for bidding now until 17 January.
