The orishas and jumbies have come out to bless the carnival before it begins. These are the underbellies of this deeply political, deeply spiritual ceremony and celebration that few get to experience. This is the reenactment of the canboulay riots where the British colonial order was attempting to outlaw the rituals of carnival because of its connection to slave revolts.
