Happy first day of winter! ☃️ May the solstice bring a restful dormancy to regenerate energy and vigor for your spring gardens! It's the season for snow and ice. Even Oregon has a frosty forecast ahead. What do you use for winter protection? We've had good luck with utilizing evergreen boughs or straw for iris in extreme weather events. We use wood chips to mulch our daylilies which can be left into the following seasons. Unlike iris, daylilies can handle mulch that retains more moisture. If you choose to apply winter protection to your iris or daylilies, remove once you see signs of new growth in the spring. Applying winter protection may not be necessary for areas with mild winters, but harsh weather events can cause heaving soil from freeze-thaw patterns that can cause frost damage and will dislodge plants that aren't well anchored.
