We should be “happy”?
This video from a now deleted account (shout out to everyone who directly challenged these notions) was in reaction to a Black woman saying that it makes her uncomfortable how folks outside of our culture put on our aesthetics like a costume. This creator decided to comment what boils down to colonizers logic. Because only colonizers feel entitled to things that they demonize us for wearing. Speaking specifically about hair: We get called tacky & ghetto for our baby hairs & braids but on other bodies, it’s called trendy. Our kids get kicked out of school, ridiculed, even have their hair CUT for wearing braids but let a different child walk in with the same hair after a vacation and it’s edgy and fun. If we cannot even enjoy our own aesthetic, why would YOU want to?
This also goes for certain celebs that are having a return to whiteness phase after quite literally putting on blackness as a costume for a few years. Y’all know who I’m talking about. It’s very...interesting to observe the sudden disappearance of BBLs, their deep tans, “boxer braids” and “Bo Derek” braids after certain life events. It’s almost like Black folks were right when we said “They want everything but the burden.” Now explain to me again, why should we be happy?
