Karine Jean-Pierre is a force to be reckoned with. She was Joe Biden’s press secretary for two years, the first Black woman and the first out gay person to hold down that role. Earlier this week, she moderated a discussion with stars of The L Word, Leisha Hailey and Kate Moennig. Before the actress arrived, I was backstage with Karine asking her about her time working as press secretary and the future of the Democratic Party. She told me she believes the Democrats have a strong bench. The only thing missing is a strong leader to emerge, to challenge Trump and lead the country forward at a time of great division. I asked if she’s planning to run for office. She said she isn’t considering it at the moment, but that she believes in America, and wants to believe progress is possible for the sake of her daughter’s future. Kate and Leisha arrived shortly after and all three of them had a hilarious discussion onstage. It was a beautiful way to kick off Pride at the Y. And the very next day, it was announced Karine Jean-Pierre is leaving the Democratic Party and becoming an independent. I hope that’s just a coincidence and had nothing to do with our chat!
