“On December 16th, the Russians fired 40 missiles at Kyiv, and 37 were shot down by our air defense forces,” writes @marieclaire_ua editor-in-chief @irynatatarenko. “Meanwhile, in nine days, we celebrate Christmas.” War torn Ukrainians are preparing for a Christmas under extreme conditions, as fear casts a shadow across a normally-joyful occasion. Despite the constant threat of attack, many are making space to honor tradition. “In the light of garlands or flickering candlelights, in a circle of loved ones or on Skype, in Kyiv or elsewhere in the world, Ukrainians will celebrate a great Christian holiday. No invading force can interfere. We believe in our victory, we believe that good always defeats evil, and we believe that even in the darkest hour, there will always be light.” At the link in bio, Tatarenko speaks with four Ukrainians about how they plan to celebrate this year.
