I love @annebuckwalter’s work per @farnsworthmuseum: The exhibition Manors is a play on houses and social etiquette (“manners”). It began as an exploration of Victorian women and their historic homes in New England, inspired by Lucy Farnsworth (1835-1939) and the Farnsworth Homestead. Buckwalter’s fascination with Farnsworth’s life and other “unconventional” women led her to visit additional historic homesteads, raising the question: “What would it look like if I moved into one of these places and brought my own things?” The resulting paintings balance the decor of these historic homes with contemporary objects like @newyorkermag, @llbean Bean Boots, and electronics. Buckwalter also paints herself into these scenes, often engaging in intimate acts. In her words, these self-portraits reframe “the erotic as part of the everyday.” Manors is a space for dialogue between private and public, inviting viewers to reconsider evolving narratives of desire, aging, and social roles. She asks, “Who would you hang over your fireplace?”
