Gabby Bennett, Basil & Tom’s I have known Gabby since i was five years old. She lived around the corner from me in Barnes, and we spent much time at each others houses while we were growing up. Her mother, like my father was American, so our references to US holidays and festivities were similar. Americans liked all the bells and whistles of Christmas. Her mother loved specialty food as did my dad and Christmas was about making sure those foods were in the house. Yet when Gabby’s British - Jewish grandparents would come over, we would have to hide all Christmas ornaments and carry the Christmas tree upstairs. Laughing hysterically we would try our best to remove all evidence of Christmas! Gabby has always loved bright colours and pretty objects. Her shop is an extension of the colourful world she inhabits. When her youngest son first came to my house, he asked where was all of my pretty objects! Gabby brightly coloured walls, fabrics and artwork, is also expressed in her hair-colour and accessories. Both of her children also appreciate the play of colour and design in their home. To watch Gabby pursue her dream and open a grocery shop with her partner Max has been fantastic to see. So special to walk inside to hear great dance tunes, and view Gabby’s careful curation of Bordallo Pinheiro crockery, chocolate, biscotti, condiments, bread, meats, cheeses and more. @basilandtoms is a place where shopkeepers Gabby & Max remember your name and your favourite produce. B&T sell @catrosecooks fresh soup, sausage rolls, speciality cakes and sweet treats for the shop. Well worth dropping by for a stocking stuffer or that special European delicacy that makes you feel like you’re on holiday! Please support small businesses.
