This is the most important photo I took in the past 10 days. It reminds me that no matter how far I travel, this will always be one of the biggest challenges of our time. And that going for a sunrise walk expecting to collect seashells and picking up plastic instead is the reality. Mi amiga @caroagoye said that plastic started showing up just a few years ago on beaches across Costa Rica, and most comes from distant places. Even the beaches I grew up going to on O’ahu were pristine until five years ago, and now you can’t pick up a handful of sand without an alarming amount of microplastics. And this is the same story across beaches all over the world. At @fishforgarbage we remove trash from waterways and there are many other wonderful organizations doing the same - but it’s not enough. This requires creative problem solving and collaboration. It is a design flaw that needs to rethought, redesigned, and reimagined. By reinventing our linear production model to have a more circular economic structure, we can imitate the natural world where “trash” does not exist.
