June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. It is meant to recognize and honour First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultures, but we recognize this is the bare minimum.
When I was a little girl, I was lucky enough to witness and experience their beautiful culture. My dad used to take me to their sacred social gatherings, where I was in awe of the traditions of their culture. We were lucky enough to be invited to these sacred ceremonies. I am so grateful because I learned a lot, and I will never forget how welcomed and safe I felt.
Today is a day of celebration for all Indigenous cultures across Canada, and as non-Indigenous people, we can honour them and educate ourselves and our children.
