BEGINNER NORDIC NOIR RECS! 🕵🏻‍♀️🖤 If I had to pick just one crime fiction subgenre to read for the rest of my life, it would be Nordic Noir. I was recently in a HUGE reading slump and returning to Nordic Noir helped get me out of it—so in that spirit, today I wanted to share 10 recs for “beginner” Nordic Noir books to read if you’re looking to explore this subgenre for yourself!!! It’s a genre defined by bleak, moody atmospheres, urban settings, and police procedural plots. Setting: Norway 🇳🇴 🔎 THE SANDMAN by Lars Kepler: another excellent and very dark serial killer thriller. Setting: Sweden 🇸🇪 🔎 THE FORGOTTEN GIRLS by Sara Blædel: a compelling mystery + endearing protagonist! Setting: Denmark 🇩🇰 🔎 THE CHESTNUT MAN by Søren Sveistrup: suuuch a creepy serial killer story. Setting: Denmark 🇩🇰 🔎 I’M TRAVELING ALONE by Samuel Bjørk: underrated! Great characters + creepy mystery. Setting: Norway 🇳🇴 🔎 THE ICE PRINCESS by Camilla Läckberg: great mystery + endearing characters + not QUITE as dark. Setting: Sweden 🇸🇪 🔎 THE LEGACY by Yrsa Sigurdardottir: a very dark, gritty plot + an unlikely duo solving crimes = SO GOOD. Setting: Iceland 🇮🇸 🔎 SNOWBLIND by Ragnar Jonasson: a slow-burn, atmospheric closed circle mystery. Setting: Iceland 🇮🇸 🔎 DEATH DESERVED by Thomas Enger & Jørn Lier Horst: a “ticking clock” style serial killer thriller.
