A lot has happened in the past year - good and bad. On every good day and every bad day, Doug was my lighthouse, showing up for every situation with more grace than I have ever seen from any other human being. He was by my side for every second of three days of labor and all the months before when I was having a really difficult pregnancy and felt like I was dying. While this was happening, he was also the caretaker for his amazing father Robert, staying by his side every moment before we lost him last year. Doug showed up for all of us, always helping however he could, all while he was going through hell himself. He has taken on fatherhood with an ease, as if he has been loving our magical shrieking avocado all his life. (This kid is so unbelievably lucky.) And no matter how busy we are or how many deadlines exist, he still has time to make me laugh. Or have kitchen dance-offs. Or to surprise me with a makeshift spa in our house. Or announce his vows in a dinosaur costume. Or to insist that I jump into the freezing pool naked if I’m having a shitty day. He is kind and strong and funny and talented and also - so so strange. (Thank God.) It was his birthday last week. Some will say this is late (ahem, Doug, ahem) but in a universe where sunspots rule and we are all ants, time is not real anyway. Also, the truth is he deserves an appreciation post every day of the year.
