When I was young my family moved from Adelaide to Melbourne. Dad worked long hours at his design job and mum worked nights as a nurse.
On occasions when they were both working, our next door neighbours, an older Italian lady named Nora and her husband Luigi would look after my brothers and I.
Nora had an incredible vegetable garden and what I remember as at least a dozen chickens. Luigi chain smoked in the living room and spoke no English. So we would cook with Nora in the kitchen. She would make these beautiful pastries that melted in your mouth. Nostalgia shit. Don’t get me wrong, my mum taught me how to cook, but Nora’s garden and those pastries started a lot of this shit.
This weeks brief was italian vibes on our usually Japanese menu. And the rule with desserts is that it has to evoke a childhood memory.
So here’s to Nora’s legacy (And her Crostoli recipe)
