This is my journey of dealing with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that affects 1 in 5 women in India and yet 70% of them go undiagnosed or do not receive proper care.
I was 25 when I started showing signs of PCOS. I had been bleeding for over two weeks after skipping a month of my period. Since my period had always been regular before that, I immediately sought help from a gynaecologist. I feared invasive questioning and judgement but decided to prioritise my health. I was put on birth control pills which made the bleeding stop but caused a havoc when it came to my mental and physical health. I started gaining weight which lead me to go off the pill and as a result the terrible cycle of missed periods or spotting for days continued. As inconvenient as the bleeding was, the physical changes of PCOS can take a toll on your overall well-being too. Mentally- the stress, fear and anxiety can sometimes leave the body feeling drained. It can be visible in a lot of cases, in my case the hairy chin or the scalp hair loss.
There are some days when I feel great and then there are some days I do not feel like getting out of bed because of the fatigue. Occasionally, I cry myself to sleep without a reason. My mental health is something that I have been prioritising because for me to be my best version I need to take care of both my physical and mental health.
The way I try to manage my PCOS is by staying active, avoiding gluten, dairy, sugar in my diet & seeking help when I see signs of imbalances in my body.
I came across @veerahealth, an online PCOS clinic that brings together all the resources that is required to manage PCOS in the long run. They are doing an amazing job in helping women understand their condition better. This gives me hope in taking control over my health and getting the answers I fail to find on other platforms as a brown woman.
Your body should feel like home, and no one deserves to go through unexplained symptoms or be left without zero resources on what to do next when dealing with PCOS.
Regardless of what you have heard, PCOS is not your fault and you deserve to treat your body with love and care with the right information.
