For @as.above.so.below.official we drew inspiration from the Elphaba doll in the Wizard of Oz silkstone collection. Huge thanks to @deedee.entity for inviting me to her brand new show.
In 1893, the American suffragist Matilda Joslyn Gage wrote a book called Woman Church and State. In it, she reframed the European witch hunts as a misogynistic attempt by the church and state to police female sexuality and women's bodies. The funny thing about her is that her son-in-law was L. Frank Baum, who wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. And so, it appears he was inspired by her writing.
To conceive of the witch as not only evil, but also good. Not just a wicked old hag, but a powerful and independent woman, who is not afraid to have some fun.
