The Idaw Mahmoud are Amazigh (or Berber, as they are commonly called), an ethnolinguistic group predominantly native to North Africa who have inhabited these mountains since ancient times. Here in the upper reaches of the High Atlas, the tribe of Idaw Mahmoud dances the Taskiwin, a traditional martial dance that takes its name from the elaborately decorated horn, or “Tiskt” that each dancer carries, shaking his shoulders to the rhythm of tambourines, drums and flutes.
