In late August, the Overlook swells with native grasses, wildflowers, and most noticeably, pink and white puffs of crape-myrtle blossoms.
Crape-myrtles—large, multistemmed shrubs that are members of the genus Lagerstroemia and are native to Asia, India, and Australia—have long been favorites in gardens and parks in the U.S. South. BBG's collection, which was expanded and diversified when the Overlook was redesigned and planted in 2019, is the northernmost collection of crape-myrtles in a U.S. botanic garden.
While you stroll the Overlook, check out birdhouses by Nina Cooke John, Suchi Reddy, Sourabh Gupta, and Andy Holden, nestled into the landscape as part of our For the Birds exhibition.
