Bergman Island in four parts, In the spring of 2016 I saw Mia Hansen-Løve’s film L’avenir at the Berlinale and was instantly smitten. Later in the summer when I was attending the yearly Bergman festival on Fårö. I found out that Mia was going to hold a masterclass but the festival lacked someone to host it and I asked if I could maybe fill this role as I had by this time seen all her films and studied her carefully. We held the class together and after went out for dinner where Mia divulged she was on the island to write a script about the place. Being born on Gotland I asked if she wanted to show her around as a type of guide and there I would stay for the next three weeks showing her around and her jolting everything down. It’s was a very pleasurable time except for the short interlude where I returned to Stockholm to be with my grandfather in his last moments. Later I returned and Mia finished her notes for her script and returned to Paris. Later in the fall I get the first draft in my inbox and a request to meet her in Paris. There’s a role in the script for a Hampus and she can’t find anyone else suitable for the role.
