I backpacked across Europe for six months after I graduated from university - usually alone and with no cell phone, internet or email (yes they didn’t exist then). I would receive mail at American Express offices (hit and miss as I kept changing my itinerary) and I’d phone home from a pay phone once a month. The sense of freedom was intoxicating - I’d decide each day where I was going, I’d meet new friends and decide to travel together for a few days, I’d get on an overnight train if the hostels were full and if I fell in love with a place (or person) I’d just stay a few extra days. This was taken in Prague, then Czechoslovakia. I didn’t have a lot - a Eurail pass, a copy of ‘Let’s Go Europe’, a journal, a camera and a whole lot of dreams. Anyone else lucky enough to travel this way?
