The past 2+ yrs I’ve been more sensitive to PMS symptoms and the natural, monthly hormonal fluctuations. It’s mainly my mood, energy, digestion, and sleep that feel impacted. I cut back my training if I feel I need to. Then I feel a shift a few days into my period and feel great again 💪💃! 3 of my past 4 races have coincided with this ~1 week time period. It’s impactful as a pro woman athlete to have the biggest races of the year coincide with this time period when I don’t feel my best. I focus on doing the best I can and controlling what I can control. I’ve been working with my dietitian and doctor to know of strategies to help work through it. We know women’s hormones change through life. We know women eventually go through menopause. No one tells you that women’s hormones can start to get weird just before this (perimenopause). Despite these changes, since I turned 40 I actually feel the best, strongest, and healthiest of my running career! I feel like I can run forever 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️. I feel like my best years are ahead of me. I hope sharing my running career going through my 40s is inspiring to other women.
