I’ve been open about my struggles with unrealistic standards of beauty. So doing this shoot felt, well...unrealistic. But, yesterday I realized if my intention is rooted in supporting other artists in our community, it’s okay to have these moments. While stepping out in head-to-toe South Asian glam from my little West Village apartment, I had a moment of gratitude as I walked down the streets, “crown” on my head. On a beautiful Fall Saturday in the Village, people unexpectedly stopped to ask about my look & shouted “Congratulations!” thinking it was my wedding day. Others knew that @sabyasachiofficial just opened a store around the corner, and another asked, “aren’t you Nina Davuluri?”. And to drive it home, I heard a passerby saying “Oh yah, it’s the Indian holiday, Diwali! You have the most beautiful fashion!” All this to say, I sometimes forget that a lot has changed. And yesterday was a nice reminder of everything little Nina could have hoped for: celebrating Diwali in the greatest city in the world & owning all parts of my story.
