I made a video asking why would anyone want to wear a hairstyle that the group who created it couldn’t wear because of hair discrimination, and you would have thought I cussed out some of these folk’s mama! There are individuals right now in my comment section, rather than condemning or even discussing the regular hair discrimination Black people face daily, they instead are calling ME hateful things for pointing it out. These individuals are claiming these traditional styles, one of the few practices our people still have after centuries of mass human trafficking, as “just hairstyles” that anyone can wear. So I challenged these individuals: if they are just hairstyles, as they say, they should be willing to do the work to ensure NO ONE loses a job or job opportunity, NO ONE gets kicked out of school, NO ONE is sheared at sporting events or matches, NO ONE faces any harassment, period, for these styles. If it’s just a style, prove it, do something to make sure it’s treated as such. I know that many of these individuals won’t do anything, they just want to wear these styles without feeling like they are culturally appropriating. But until my people can be at peace with our cultural practices, that’s exactly what they are doing. And I’m going to keep being loud about it.
