Last summer, a beautiful red-bellied woodpecker began visiting my bird feeder almost every day. I quickly fell in love with him and named him Woody (very creative, I know š). I loved watching him move around the feederāchirping, exploring, doing all the bird thingsāand right then I knew I wanted to paint him. This monthās Happy Mail artwork grew from that memory. The piece is mixed media. I drew and cut a stencil for the tree, made a print using my Gelli plate, then hand-drew Woody. I added watercolor and ink for his colors, cut him out, and attached him to the card. As the piece evolved, I felt prompted to add a small window in the tree trunkāthen to make the card interactive. I cut a tiny peace branch, so the window can open and the branch can be placed near the rainbow inside. The word Peace guided this piece. I felt it while watching Woody in the yard, and I feel it deeply during this holiday season. The verse that inspired this monthās Happy Mail comes from John 14:27: āPeace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.ā ⨠Happy Mail is still available for $10, with a few December spots open.
