El Sismo 2017 19th September, 2017, was the 32nd anniversary of a devastating 8.1M earthquake that killed over 10,000 and displaced thousands. In the tragically serendipitous way this city seems to operate, Mexico City was hit by a 7.1M on that same date. Although, I’d been through bush fire evacuations in the past, up until that point (before the pandemic) I’d never before seen a community pull together so quickly and so intensely. It was a scary time to be living in Mexico City, but more than fear, I felt gratitude, awe and immense respect at how resources were pooled, food dispersed, signs erected, safe houses opened and so many many hands making heavy work lighter.
