Say you have an old friend who’s been living overseas, in France no less. Will it show? Will they have changed? That’s part of what I was thinking as I walked up to a Popeyes in, of all places, Lyon. I was also thinking: What is the matter with me? I am visiting the city known as the French capital of gastronomy, a global destination for cuisine, and I’m about to get down on some Popeyes? Well, I had my reasons. One highlight was the sandwich above, by far the best fast food fried chicken sandwich I’ve had, almost approaching the standards of normal restaurants. The rest though? Was it a case of different birds? Different cooks? Something perhaps lost in translation? And with no biscuits nor red beans, is it even Popeyes? They’re doing it differently in France that’s for sure.
