Thank you for these amazing words @valkatnyc
Posted @withrepost • @valkatnyc You know I'd be perfectly happy to drink nothing but “German-speaking wines” every day of the year. But there are a few things that can pull me out of that orbit and into other universes.
Like this Riesling. Grown at 650 masl, organically farmed, skin-fermented, 0/0 — from Greece. A one-off made by the Vaimaki family in 2013. Spicy, resinous, bursting with tangerine, quince, and clove animated by vivacious acidity. Alluringly complex w/ sleek, silken texture and weight. One of the most indelibly distinctive, delicious expressions of Riesling I’ve encountered.
But it would never have crossed my path if my husband hadn’t signed me up for the @orange_glou wine club. I’ve written about this before. How the last thing a wine writer thinks she needs is a wine club subscription. How the assumptions built into wine clubs - cheap bottles in trite combinations designed to move stock - keep most wine people from buying in. And how Orange Glou blew all of this up for me by proving itself a source of the most incredible discoveries.
Since 2019, founder @doreenmwinkler has been scouring the globe for difficult-to-source (the Mater Natura 3, for instance, was one of 900 bottles) skin-fermented whites from around the globe that always open my mind and frequently melt my heart. The fact that they are orange is – almost – beside the point. They are like core samples expertly drawn from key points around the wine world.
Now you can access them at Doreen's adorable Broome Street shop in NYC, through the club and - on Sunday, 6 November 12-4 p.m. - at her first Orange Glou Fair. 50+ orange wine producers – including some of my very favorites @2naturkinder @weingutheinrich @grawu.wine @maloofwines @schoedl.family – will be there, pouring, chatting, and sharing the orange love. I hope to see you, too. To that end, fair info is up in the bio link. ✴️💥
