Meet Latifah McBryde — a 17-year-old fierce hijabi wrestler who won her latest U.S. national wrestling competition, qualifying her to head to the Pan-American wrestling championships this July. There’s just one problem — @unitedworldwrestling (the international wrestling governing body) won’t allow her to compete with her Islamic uniform or hijab.
This isn’t the first and won’t be the last time we see this kind of discrimination in sports. We’ve seen it with @bilqisabdulqaadir, who overturned the ruling in basketball; and @nooralexandria, who was disqualified in a cross country meet due to a religious headwear waiver and worked to pass a state law in Ohio that will prevent religious discrimination in high school sports from every happening again.
Now we need to change the game for Latifah @latifah_theartist so she can compete in a competition she literally fought for. To show your support, share Latifah’s story and tag @unitedworldwrestling to demand that UWW accommodates her attire and allows her to compete.
See our stories for a petition you can sign in support of Latifah's fight. Every girl and woman should be able to compete regardless of her uniform and/or headcovering. Period.
