Yoga Abs: Spicy Edition!🌶🔥We all know I love to yammer on about the mental benefits of yoga - but on a physical level, you really do learn compound muscular movement in such a unique way. The core specifically is essential to the practice, especially when you use awareness to engage the often neglected abdominal muscles. Check out a few examples below. Disclaimer: some of them are more advanced, so please don’t attempt the dynamic movement unless you are very comfortable in the static posture first. ▪️Headstand tucks (Sirsāsana): Once you’re in a static headstand, zip the legs together and bend at the knees. Draw the knees in towards the navel, then push back up to the starting position. Go slow - you should feel this in your side and lower abs. ▪️Headstand leg press (Sirsāsana): Similar as above, start in static headstand. Reach one foot up to the ceiling, and lower the other leg with the toes reaching in front of you. When you bring that leg back up, think of it as “pressing” it up to the ceiling - you should really feel this in your lower abs. Then switch! Remember to stay strong through the back core by cinching your shoulder blades down the spine. ▪️Downward dog crunches (Adho mukha svanāsana): Starting in downward dog, raise one leg behind you. Shift your weight forward so the shoulder comes above your wrists. At the same time, use your abdomen to draw the knee into the chest and squeeze it in. Important: don’t rely on momentum to swing your knee forward - instead, take your time to make slow, controlled movements. ▪️Low boat-high boat (Navāsana): From regular boat pose (legs can also be bent at starting), lean back with your arms extended forward as you lower your legs down to hover just above the mat. Keep your spine elongated and neck relaxed, stabilizing from your core. Use your abdomen to “pinch” you back up to where you started.
