They put us all inside a 20-foot barrel at Pipeline. They gave us ride-along on the helmet of a human as they willingly flung themselves out of a perfectly good vessel at the edge of space. They are @gopro. And they are Made in San Diego. The stars of this video are @ouka.sam and @shamsfilmmaker. Ouka is a purebred Samoyed—a breed known for high energy levels— who was returned by two different owners who couldn’t keep up with his activity level. Thankfully, he crossed paths with Sham, an adventurer and paragliding pilot, last summer. Sham adopted him, and now Ouka can get his energy out by hiking across mountains, swimming in lakes, stand-up paddle boarding, and—most recently—taking flight. Sham spent months building trust with Ouka before even thinking about paragliding with him. He had a custom harness made for Ouka, and the duo started by getting comfortable with the equipment. The next step was to slowly run to the edge of a small hill in the harness to see how Ouka reacted. After seeing his enthusiasm and lack of fear, Sham planned out their next steps. First they paraglided for just a few seconds from one hill to another. And over time, Sham and Ouka built up to what you see here: a full flight. The takeoff is still mellow—jogging, then running, until the wind lifts them (no skydiving involved). Ouka pulls Sham the entire way until they’re airborne.
