Sir William Burrell bought his first painting at age 15 and never looked back — amassing an art collection with his wife Lady Constance that included 9,000 objects they would gift to the city of Glasgow in 1944. The still life pictured above, Pink Roses, is one of seven S.J. Peploe (1871-1935) paintings Burrell purchased between 1919-1926. Peploe, a Scottish Colourist painter, was enamored with roses and the work of Paul Cézanne, whose geometric shapes and directional brushwork provided likely inspiration.
