‘Gilded Darkness’, a new solo exhibition by Nari Ward, on view through October 16 in Milan • Presented by @Fondazione_Trussardi, curated by Massimiliano Gioni • Exhibited in the indoor and outdoor spaces of the Centro Balneare Romano in the Città Studi neighborhood — A centerpiece of the show is the new site-specific installation ‘Emergence Pool’. Pictured in slides 1–3, the work fills the venue’s 4,000-square-meter swimming pool with thermal blankets. @NariWard’s renowned 1993 installation ‘Amazing Grace‘ (slides 4–6) is also on view, bringing together hundreds of strollers arranged in the form of a ship’s hull. The works presented in ‘Gilded Darkness’ engage with and respond to the history and architecture of the Centro Balneare Romano. The municipal bathing center—designed by architect Luigi Secchi during the Fascist period, inaugurated in 1929, and dedicated to the memory of the young Olympic champion Guido Romano, who died serving as a soldier in World War I—represents ideals of victory and greatness, war and athleticism, and nationalism and imperialism. Ward responds to these concepts with precarious monuments and objects that embody stories of everyday heroism, episodes of collective joy, and images of the defeat and downfall of the triumphant myths that shaped the 20th century. — Images courtesy Fondazione Nicola Trussardi · #NariWard #FondazioneTrussardi #Milan #LehmannMaupin
