Just another Monday night! I’m kidding. This was one of the best talks I’ve worked on. As many of you know, Rob Reiner directed all-time classics like The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, A Few Good Men and of course, When Harry Met Sally... And also starred in New Girl, The Wolf of Wall Street and All in the Family, among many other projects. He appeared Monday night to talk about his newest film, the sequel to his 80s cult comedy Spinal Tap. Appearing with Rob was one of his oldest friends, the original SNL writer Alan Zweibel. To be backstage and hear these two cutting it up, reminiscing about the old days is a memory I won’t soon forget. I even got to ask Rob about his sense of things politically. He’s a dedicated liberal activist and he told me he’s concerned about how the Supreme Court rules on the USAID case, and that if it goes Trump’s way, then “it’s all over.” Onstage, the pair couldn’t have been funnier. Reiner told the behind-the-scenes story of the famous fake orgasm scenes at Katz’s Deli. He said that at the start, Meg Ryan was a little uncomfortable and gave a muted performance. So as the director, he stepped in and gave a table-slapping, foot-stomping performance for her to emulate. Later, Billy Crystal said it was like being on a date with Sebastian Cabot — a reference I had to look up afterwards. Just such a delight to meet these two icons. I hope to see them both again soon at the Y!
