SICKLE CELL DISEASE 📍 Sickle cell disease is one of the fastest growing genetic conditions but not many people know enough about it. After having a recent conversation with my friend, I decided that I would share my knowledge and experience working as junior doctor in haematology. What is scary is that million of people do not even know that they carry the sickle triad. Here are some facts bout sickle cell that you may not know yet: 1. HB SS is the most common type of sickle cell disease but individuals can also be HBSC Or even HBSF. 2. There are only a handful of drugs (2) that can reduce the incidence of painful sickle cell-related episodes. 3. The only medical cure for sickle cell is a bone marrow or stem cell transplant. 4. Life expectancy 25 years ago was around 21 years , now that has increased dramatically to over 50 years ❤️😭 5. Each year it is thought that 500,000 people worldwide are born with sickle cell disease. Always stay informed and up to date. Awareness is key and early genetic testing is very important.
